As much as I've always dreamed of living in another country, I never would had thought that my dream would turn into reality. Since as far I could remember, I always wanted to just escape and visit exotic places. When I first learned about Dubai (yes, learned because i've never even heard of that place) in 2009 from a friend that was working there, I have been obsessed ever since. I would research the country almost everyday up until the day I actually visited, which was six years later January 2015. I just wanted to visit "the world tallest building" thats all I told myself. Talk about speaking things into existence, I believe all things happen when its suppose to. When I got to Dubai on the very first day, I already knew that three days there just wasn't enough. Have you ever saw a kid in a toy store? Or a person experience snow for the first time? Well that was me in Dubai. The weather, the skylines, the people dressed in abaya's and kandoora's I was so in awe over everything. Moving forward, many people would ask "well how did you choose Dubai out of all places?" To be honest, Dubai chose me. What really fascinated me was my first Airbus 380 experience to Dubai. I've flown before many times, but never on an aircraft like the 380. Once I stepped foot on the aircraft, I immediately wanted to work for that airline ( I cannot mention the name for the sake of my job but if you are clever then you know which one I am talking about) As soon as I landed back in New York I had the website pulled up on my phone applying to be a "cabin crew." Fast forward 8 months later I was moving to Dubai. Honestly, when I applied to the position and also went to the"assessment day" I thought I would be based in NY, but nope to my surprise at the assessment day is when I found out I would have to pack my things and move to Dubai. How exciting was that for me, to always have dreamed of living in another country to it actually happening . I can definitely say this is something i've manifested into existence. Below are some photos from my visit to Dubai, leading up to my interview day and also the day I saw my status update from "pending to approved",to packing my bags leaving New Jersey and arriving in Dubai my very first night, enjoy.
This is the face of someone that just cried all their tears out...I am beyond excited to have found out that I will be joining Emirates!! Let's rewind for a minute. So Back in January I applied for Emirates. In March I received an invitation to an Open Day which is basically a recruitment event. In May I flew out to Atlanta and there was 51 of us there. Out of 51 I believe only 7 of us made it through to the final interview. So after that (June 1, 2015 to be specific), it has been a waiting game since then. I would go online to check my status everyday only to see "Final interview complete" at this point its 50/50 because they can either tell you yes or no. I would log on to my Facebook group and see that everyone has gotten their JFIP (Joining Formalities In Progress) which means you got the job. On June 8th I received a text from two individuals whom I met down in Atlanta that was also at the opening day. Unfortunately they were not successful. Receiving that text message alone scared me and while I was at work I said to myself "let me go check my status...and BOOM my status went from "Final Interview Complete" to " Joining Formalities in Progress" I cried soo freaking hard that my co workers were worried about me. Little did they know, it was tears of joy. At this point all I can do is thank Jesus and just think about how my life is about to change. So at this point its another waiting game for the Golden Call and pretty much what that is, its when they call you to congratulate you and also ask a few questions like are you married or single? What is your annual leave destination? How much notice do you have to give your job? and finally CAN YOU START ON ______ DATE? SO I am happy to say that I received my Golden Call on Saturday July 12 (their Sunday morning) at 11 pm asking me those questions and also asking if I am able to start on September 10th. Heck yea I can!!!! But there's another waiting game...LOL .We have to sign into a portal and upload documents such as medical forms, contract acceptance, passport photo ect....and then we will finally receive the FA (Final Approval) So I am realllllly super duper excited and happy to say that my life From September 10 and so forth will forever be changed!!! I AM GOING TO BE LIVING IN DUBAI!!!! OMG..I CANNOT FREAKING BELIEVE THIS!!
P.S to anyone thats waiting on their status to be updated to JFIP and to receive their GC be patient and just believe that you got the job..Claim it. thats what I did and I prayed every single day I still pray and Thank Jesus for blessing me with this opportunity. Its my passion to travel the world and this is definitely going to open other doors for me!!! Good Luck!!! see you in Dubai!
When I first traveled to Dubai in January 2015 all I can think of was how IMPRESSED I was with Emirates Airlines. The aircraft itself was amazing and of course the service was amazing as well. I am BIGGGGG on customer service and I can say that their service was really good. I didn't quite know what to name this post but then all I can think about was my number for the recruitment event, smiles and red lips. Yes, RED LIPS! Seems to me that Emirates is big on smiles and presentation. (If you are familiar with Emirates all the women attendants wear red lipstick.) Don't get me wrong, I am sure other airlines are big on presentation but its something about Emirates that stands out from other airlines.
Any who, I was so impressed or should I say obsessed with Emirates that as soon as I got home I applied to their airlines. On March 26 2015 I received an email invitation to their recruitment day. I was FLABBERGASTED! I mean come on, this is Emirates I am talking about. One of the world's largest airlines. I was really happy to know that they saw something in ME..LITTLE O' ME.
Fast forward to the big day, I decided to fly out to Atlanta, GA for my event. One because I loveeeeeeeeee Atlanta and prior to me wanting to work for Emirates I planned on moving there this August. But thats on hold. So, I arrived to the Renaissance hotel and oh wait let me rewind back. So in the email invitation they tell you to wear a knee length skirt or dress with skin tone stockings. It's VERY IMPORTANT to come looking like a million bucks! Ok maybe not a million bucks but come looking like you want this job. I can't stress it enough that you should look well put together, natty, polished, whatever. I saw two females in pants and all I could do is shake my head. Anyways, if you are familiar with Emirates attire the women wears red lipstick, pearls and a bun to the back. So you should come dressed as such. When I arrived to the event that's pretty much all your saw. Beautiful women in their really cute outfits and we really all looked like flight attendants. Its best to make friends with people there. You will be around them ALL day (thats if you are lucky) I am still in constant communications with two young ladies that made it through; Chandler and Chelsea (Hey Y'all!)
Its about 51 of us there and we are all placed inside a conference room. I thought it was going to be several recruiters there but surprisingly there was only 1, which to me is great because it gave the recruiter a chance to get to know you rather than you speaking to 5 different recruiters being judged in 5 different ways. Trust me, it happened at another airline interview that was horrible. So for the first two hours it's an introduction about the job description, the pay, what its like living in Dubai ( you do know that you have to live there right?) safety, what its like to work for Emirates, all the good stuff. At the end we get to ask questions. YOU BETTER ASK!! I am not the one to ask good questions but I wanted this Job so damn bad that I wasn't myself that day. I mean I was me but I was being more open than I'm normally am. I didn't care how silly my questions were (which by the way they weren't) I just wanted my voice to be heard and it shows that you are interested. So if you are there please ask questions or just a question. You will stand out. The question I asked was about the hours. I want to be as detailed with you as possible. I think I asked if we are only guaranteed 83 hours. And I asked something else which was a really good question but i forget :-(
Towards the end of the answer and question, we had to provide the recruiter with a photo and a CV (Curriculum Vitae) which is basically a document outlining all your experiences, your interest, education, employment ect. This was my picture i submitted (Thanks BritTea)
Along with my cover letter and resume. Now on my cover letter I wrote about my interest for emirates, customer service skills, how I have the ability to work well with others and different cultures etc. However, when writing your CV or cover letter, please use these phrases: Cosmopolitan, Pioneer, thorough, you natural ability to work well with people from all cultures in other words tell them you are diverse but don't use the word diverse. I mean you can but it sounds better when you say " I have the ability to deal with individuals from many backgrounds" thats a littttttle piece of what I wrote. I must admit, my cover letter was EPIC! I want to share with you all but I can't :-( but if you need help, please let me know. I am here to help you. Anyways after that we took a lunch for about a hour. If i was you I would NOT go far. I took my butt next door for some breakfast so that I wouldn't be too far from the hotel. I saw people come in late to the session. Being late is a huge NO NO!!! I can tell the recruiter was very annoyed with the two people that came in late. Being on time is very important if you are late to work do you think the flight is going to wait on you? Think about it.
Ok, so I am back from lunch and there's a list outside of who made it and who didn't. Yes, I know you are probably wondering well if they only gave us an introduction how could they cut people already. Well they didn't. The recruiter just worded it wrong. So the list is divided by two. The first 26 people (oh wait this is where number 6 come in at) when we handed the recruiter our photograph and CV we had to write our name on this numbered paper and that was your number throughout the whole day. I was number 6. A Proud Number 6. Lol. Anyways, once we got back the fun began!!
Activity One: So we are in this room in groups of three and she handed us a card. Now let me tell you, these group activities aren't implemented just for the hell of it. It's to see how well you work with others. You do not want to talk too much or talk too little. You do not want to cut someone off while talking or think your ideas is better. Its team work!!! You are in this together. So in this activity, we were handed a card and we had to come up with three attributes for whatever it was on that card. It could have been a penny, a hat, a cord. Our group card was " Farmer." Now as we are discussing what attributes we can use to describe a farmer the recruiter was walking around and taking notes. Man I was so nervous everytime she walked by me. You just have to be so interested in whatever it is you and your group is talking about. show your group you understand but also talk!!!! lol. So 5 minutes is up and as a group we had to present what it was that we came up with. Now here are some more tips. Talk to the group of people. Not the recruiter. What the recruiter is looking for is your delivery when speaking. Not everyone likes public speaking but in this profession you will need to love it! When your group stands up, please introduce yourself. HI My name is Shakiesha and the one attribute WE (there's no I in team.) came up with was patience. As a farmer you need patience because during off season your crops will not grow and cash flow will decrease. BOOM! Just like that. You don't need to say anything more than just that. They do not want a life story (and of course we had that one person who gave one and he got cut after that round) When you are talking to the group please look at everyone. Hold the card up and show everyone. Speak Loud and clear. Yes it may seem like I'm telling you things you already know but when its time to actually do this its either fight or flight and some didn't fight. They were nervous, they spoke low, spoke too long, they sounded like they were only given 2 seconds to prepare when we were really given 5 minutes. So please read what I am saying because it will HELP you!
Next we were giving another card with another item on it. Luckily, we were giving a bucket and we had to come up with how the bucket related to the profession of a farmer. Now in this activity we as a group have to come up with one answer. However, only one of us had to present it to everyone. We didn't choose who was going to speak. The recruiter did. Again, refer back to my tips above while presenting information to the group. At the end we were all done and left the room for 10 minutes so we can see who made it through to the second round.
We're all in the lobby looking scared of course thinking who made it and who didn't back from out 45 min break and there's the list. YES, THE LIST where you find out if you made it or nFinally, the recruiter comes out with the list. OMG! I was nervous but nothing crazy. I am normally nervous and worried when it comes to interviews but I Prayed for this. SO I walked up to the list to see that 12 people made it through. YES!!!! LITTLE O ME WAS ON THE LIST!! NUMBER 6. RIGHT THERE. BOOM ALL IN YOUR FACE. LOL. But all I could do is THANK GOD!! Because it was HE who moved me to the next phase. I been praying and preparing for this day far too long to be turned down.
Activity two: After our 45 min break, we're back in the room with the 12 people that made the cut and this is where we had to do the reach test and tell the recruiter if we have any tattoos or scars ( I have a story for you but maybe in the next post) Let me tell you now, if you have a tattoo that is visible, please be honest and make sure its not visible. One girl made it to round two and she was honest about her tattoos. One was on her foot and the other on her neck. I think it was a little heart or something. BUT she end up leaving because her tattoos were visible. SOOOO, no tattoos on your foot, neck, chest, arms , wrist ect...Im not saying that you can't have a tattoo but it can't be visible. As far as the reach test, I'm only 5'0 and was worried that I wouldn't pass the reach test. NOPE. Wrong, I passed it standing on my tippy toes with all my might. There was no way I made it to round two and was going to fail some reach test. I was also honest about my tattoo I have one on the middle of my back and the other under my collar bone. They will also pass around a paper with a person on it wearing an under garment and you have to make sure that your tattoo cannot be seen outside that garment. so again, if you have a tattoo just be honest.
After that, we got back to our seats which is literally only 12 chairs positioned in the shape of an U. The recruiter hands us each a card and then say "someone volunteer to read." Idk if the other individuals heard her or if they were scared but there was no time to be scared. I did not hesitate to start reading. So on this card, there's a question and 6 different scenarios about that question. Our question was something about being manager at a water park what would you do in these situations. So as a group we had to go over all 6 questions and come up with an answer. Again, she is watching how we are interacting with one another. This is more intense because as group of 12 (not 3) we have to come up with ideas, talk to one another ect. You can't over talk anyone, down play someones else ideas ect.. So when the time was up she called on one of us to speak for the group on each answer. Her question was "as a group what resolution did you come up with for..." Let me remind you, there's 12 people and 6 questions. only 6 people are going to be called. So thats why its important to participate and let your voice be heard, be understanding of others while also coming up with your own ideas. Of course she called on me and I so thankful and was ready!!! BUT, she flipped it on us...LOL. Don't think you was going to just give the answer the group came up with an be done. NAHHH!H. The recruiter had a come back for everything. Basically she would say " well what if this don't happen, what if this don't work, what if, and then she started to act like the customer in the situation. So now she's role playing and you have to be on point. As a group the answer is fine, but now as an individual in that situation you have to know what to do. Always SMILE! and be polite to the customer! We only came up with the good answers but we didn't think worst case scenario. So when you make it this far, please think of the situation in ALL aspects. At the end we went on another break for about 10 min, she had to post the list of people who made it through.
So we're back!! the list is up. YES, AGAIN! Another list..ANOTHER CUT! OMG!!!!!! what do I see? My number 6 yeaaaaaa babbbbbyy! at this point I think I cried and again, I was Thanking God. Well actually I was thanking God from the time I got the invite in March, before during and after the recruiting day. I just couldn't believe that me..a person that sucks at interviews was moving forward. After this theres no more group activities. Out of the 12, two people got cut . Ooh by the way this event day started at 9 am, it was now almost 3 pm. going on 4. This last section is for those that did not graduate high school in the United States and or if your first language is not english. Sorry Foreigners, I have no clue what the english test is about so I cannot speak on it. But there is a cut if you do not pass. So we sat down and we are handed some documents. It's a sheet of paper that tells us exactly what you need to do next. We also have to sign off on some declaration papers saying we don't have tattoos, check off a few questions like can you swim and float? There were more questions but I forget what they were. We have to submit more documents to them so she also gave us a code name to use in the subject line (which I will NOT share) for when sending emails to the recruitment team. We also had to pick our one on one interview time, which had to be scheduled within the next day or two.
Below please look at whats next after you make it this far:
1. You need to complete a Psychometric Test that night before midnight in order to do your final interview. Its one of those test that ask the same questions in different ways. SO just be careful and pay attention (also, this cannot be completed on a MAC or iPhone, iPad etc)
2. Fill our pre join administration form. This is pretty much a paper application. (you need this to complete your interview for the next day)
Side Note: Now these are documents you will send to them via email within the next 7 days. But I am listing them here for you now because you can also bring these items to the recruitment day and hand them over. Had I known exactly what we needed I would have been prepared. But Relax, this part doesn't make you look bad if you are not prepared because in the original email it only states that you need to bring a photograph and CV which many of us did.
3. Colored passport photo (2) or a government ID if you do not own a passport.
4. A. formal full length photo in business attire (x1) size 4x6
B.Passport size photo in business attire (x8)
C.Casual photo meaning you're hanging out. However, keep it professional. (x2) size 4x 6
5.Photo copy of Educational Certificates (College diplomas ect..)
6. Complete a survey
Please remember these documents are due within 7 days of your final interview. On the paper provided, it give examples of exactly what they are looking for. Here are my examples.
REMEMBER I SAID WHEN I THINK OF EMIRATES I THINK OF ALL THE SMILES I SAW WHEN I FLEW WITH THEM. WELL PLEASE SMILE THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE DAY LOL. SERIOUSLY SMILE AND IN YOUR PICTURES PLEASE SMILE. ITS A REQUIREMENT.
Final Interview...The Next Day.
So, MY big day is here. I scheduled my interview for 8 AM because I had a flight leaving that afternoon. Now let me tell you this, when picking and choosing interview times we had some complications because one person wanted this time the other person wanted that same time and so forth. People had flights and only 6 interviews were being booked for the day So we had to settle it between the group and figure out who was going to take what time. The interview lasted for about an half hour. When I walked towards her I of course greeted her with a smile and handshake. We sat down she asked how Im doing ect. I told her I slept well and I feel good. Just be positive and smile. So now we're beginning and I am extremely sorry for not remembering any of the questions but I will tell you this, they are situational questions. please use the STAR method. if you do not know what it is please see below
Situation- tell her what happened. be detailed
Task - What needed to be done in the situation.
Action- What did YOU do in this situation
Result- What was the outcome of tis situation.
Be careful what you say because the recruiter will piggy back off what you said and ask more questions in regards to your answer. For one of my answers I basically told her I had an employee who didn't trust my word. The recruiter came back and asked if I ever told the employee how I felt. I said no. I think that was a trick question. I think she wanted to know if I was a confrontational person. I could be wrong.
Oh wait a few questions came to mind. One was Name a time you went above and beyond for a customer Another was talk about a time you and an employee didn't agree to something. Another one I remember is Tell her about your biggest life mistake What made you apply (because I visited Dubai I thought this gave me extra points lol) and the last one I remember was ..ahhh forget it, I forget. The interview was over and I now had to submit the pending documents to complete my file.
What's Happening Now?
Well within two day's I submitted all my documents. The process can take 4-6 weeks. I just got a call On 6/17 I was excitedddddd. I just knew this was my GC aka Golden Call. But it wasn't. They needed me to send more photos of me in a tank top and one in a white blouse to see how it would look in uniform. Yup thats what she said. So again, be honest with your tattoos because it can really hurt you in the process. below are the pictures I sent to them regarding my tattoo. So the first pic is similar to the demo pic we saw during recruitment day. When they called me, they wanted me to send photos of me in an undergarment that I would normally wear under a blouse. So I sent them picture number two top right. OF course my tattoo is showing and at this point I am leaving it to God because they clearly were reviewing my file and is interested in me. They know about my tattoo, they just need more information on it. They also requested A photo of me in a white blouse to make sure that the tattoo cannot be seen through a white shirt. So I sent them three photos wearing three different type tops to show them that my tattoo cannot be seen.
At this point...
I am just waiting to hear back from Emirates. My application on line says "application under review" I have faith and I already claimed this job. I am praying all goes well. I am in a group chat with two young ladies that also made it through the final. One of them told me today that her status on her online file changed to " Joining Formalities in Process" The next step after that is your Golden Call. The call We are all waiting for. So until next time, I hope you all enjoyed this lengthy post about Emirates Recruitment day. I tired to be as detailed as possible because I know how it was for me when I was searching for information. Please Please Please, if you have questions please ask. I will help you!!!
So after sending the additional photos, I received an email subject line reads : NEW FORMAL LENGTH PHOTO and the email stated they are still waiting on my documents. However, they were already sent and I was confused as to why the email asked for a formal length when the recruiter asked for something different. No biggie! I sent all photos requested and as of June 21 my status went from Application Under Review to Interview Complete!! I also joined some groups on Facebook and they are veryyyy helpful.
Below is the new formal length photo I sent to them as requested.
Have you ever felt yourself being between a rock and a hard place? Maybe your mind in the battlefield? Lately, I've been going through what I would call spiritual warfare. That's when the devil is attacking or shall I say TRYING to attack and devour you. They say the mind is a very powerful force. It can either Enslave us or Empower us. It can plunge us into the depths of misery or take us to the heights of ecstasy. Lately, I've been feeling as if my mind alone had me imprisoned. I hate my job and I know I don't belong there. But lately, it was a different hate towards my job as if I had "checked out." I didn't care about anything from my appearance, being late everyday and I'm talking 30+ minutes to the point where my manager had to ask if I was OK and provide me with a warning. I am great at what I do. For those that don't know, I work at a mortgage company. But its not where my heart desires to be. I am a free spirited individual who really just want to travel the world and give back in anyway possible. Anyways, back to my crazy mind. I really felt like giving up on life, I didn't care if I got fired, there were times I would go out side for a fresh breath of air and think about not coming back in to work. BUT GOD! Let me tell you, He is AWESOME and I really just want to share with you what He has been doing for me these last couple of days. So I decided to draw near to God. HMM, what does that mean you may ask. Well it Means praying for and feeding your mind and body with the word. So I decided to read the book of 1 Peter and I came across this one verse that literally changed everything. Its 1 Peter 2:13 and it reads " Submit to every Human Authority...." How can we expect God to bless us if we are not being obedient to his word? How can I want God to place me in the field of interest if I am not submitting to my manager, and the work place policies? So, that very next day I started waking up on time. I never wake up on time for work. If I have to be to work at 8:30 I am rolling out of my bed at 8:30. So God has been waking me up so that I can leave on time and for the past three days I have been on time. I don't even think about how much I hate my job. I just go to work and I am as mellow as can be. I am actively working and no longer complaining. Most importantly I am very thankful for my job because without it I wouldn't have been able to cross some adventures off of my living list. It's very important for us to just place God first in everything, pray and feed our mind and body with the word. For some years now, I've always wanted to blog but I've always doubted my abilities to do so. I've always had self doubt and one of my favorite verses in the bible is James 1:8 " An indecisive man is unstable in all his ways" I've been unstable in all my ways far too long, from relationships, emotions, spiritual life and so forth. I no longer want to be that person. So anyways, as I continued to read the bible (drawing close to God) He placed something in me that wasn't in me before. It was the energy to sit for three hours without touching my phone or getting out my room or just being distracted period, so that I can work on my blog. I wrote a lengthy blog (Red Lips, Emirates and the number 6) that I never thought I would have the ability to do. He is working on me and you don't have to wait years before you see your blessings. Well wait, I lied if you aren't making him your focus then you will wait. He already know what our hearts desires and He want to give us everything we ask for but we must work for it. I've been wanting to blog for years now. I created blogs but never pursued it after creating it. It wasn't until a few days ago that God started blessing me with he things my heart desires and thats because I am feeding my spirit with His word. You may think its small but these things are major to me. If he can do it for me He WILL do it for you. Just have faith. Before, I was just praying but thats all I was doing. Prayer sometimes is not enough. James 2: 17 Faith without works is DEAD. Not only should we be praying but we need to feed our minds and souls with His word and be consistent with it. Until next time.....Peace and Blessings.
Discover Your purpose...
6/4/2015 3 Comments
What does it mean to discover your purpose? I find myself asking that question almost everyday.
The funny thing is, I thought it meant finding one thing that you loved and sticking to it. I was completely wrong. It wasn't until recently that I was texting with a friend and he asked me "what is it exactly that you want to do?" So I began to go down the list of things I want to accomplish. I started saying how indecisive I am, and then I also mentioned how I love traveling and if I can travel the world I would. It was right there and then that I answered my own question. Yes, there are still a ton of things on my list I would like to become, accomplish, and do; however I could never tell anyone, not even myself what my passion was because I would start listing a ton of things. I couldn't focus on just one I wanted to focus on them all. Although it was just recently that I answered my own question about what I am passionate about I still felt a void there. Yes I enjoy traveling I told myself, and although I have traveled to many places and it was nice, I still felt empty. So now not only did I find my passion, but now I am seeking to find the purpose behind my passion. I want to travel with a purpose. Its nice to go places, sight see and meet people from all over, don't get me wrong, I absolutely love it! I just feel like I should be dong more when I travel. Have you been in this position before? What was it like? Did you not only discover your passion but also your purpose?
